Community Ed Series with Dr. Elliot Quataert

    Main Hall
This event is hosted by the Athenian Parent Association and is open to all. Come learn with us!

Black holes are one of the most remarkable predictions of Einstein’s theory of gravity: so much material is compressed into such a small region of space that nothing, not even light, can escape. Black holes have also captured the public imagination, and are commonly featured in popular culture. In the past few years, the world-wide Event Horizon Telescope released the first real (non-Hollywood!) picture of gas around a black hole. Dr. Quataert will describe how these observations were made and what they have taught us about black holes.

    Register here.

CS: Food Bank of Contra Costa County

California has one of the largest economies in the world and yet, in spite of our amazing agricultural abundance, 1 in 11 people–and 1 in 8 children–are facing hunger. The Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano provides 3,500,000 meals each month. You will be helping distribute produce to people at Clinica de la Raza in Concord.

Plan to be available from 7:45am to 11:00am. Transportation will be available from campus and a BART station.

10th Graders can sign up through their TrackItForward Accounts.

CS: National AIDS Memorial Grove Workday

The National AIDS Memorial Grove, located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park, is a dedicated space where millions of Americans touched directly or indirectly by AIDS can gather to heal, hope, and remember. This living memorial honors all who have confronted this tragic pandemic—both those who have died and those who have shared their struggle, kept the vigils, and supported each other during the final hours. They hold a monthly work day and you will work with other volunteers weeding and landscaping the grove. There will be a remembrance ceremony at noon and food.

Because of transportation, plan to be available from 7:45am to 2:00pm. Transportation will be available from campus and at least one BART station.

9th Graders can sign up through their TrackItForward accounts.
